Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their release of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Dispute

The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in defense or security roles.

"As we did, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this constitution," the officials affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out orders that break the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Angry Response

The video message seemed to prompt a angry response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives React

Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a unified statement denouncing the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this country and made an oath to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they execute their vow to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."

More Governmental Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."

He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that is historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."

Administration Reaction

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."

"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."

She stated: "The purity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
