Heavy Precipitation Worsen Circumstances for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Warn
Heavy precipitation over the past week have intensified the precarious circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of evacuated Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to relief organizations.
"Horrendous" Conditions Creates Serious Dangers
A representative detailed the weather overnight as "horrendous", with precipitation so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was truly difficult for the people. The storms were so strong... And the gusts were so powerful," said the representative.
Authorities voice grave anxiety that young ones sheltering in makeshift shelters in damp garments will succumb to hypothermia and various sicknesses.
Deaths and Significant Loss
Medical officials have confirmed that one baby has succumbed from exposure and no fewer than 11 other people have died in structural failures due to the storms.
Additional accounts indicate a greater number of casualties. Officials stated that multiple residential buildings had fully given way and scores had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by rains.
- More than 40 official shelters submerged.
- Countless residents required to relocate again.
Aid Efforts Deemed Not Enough
Organizations have stepped up distribution of tarpaulins, bedding and clothes since the truce commenced, but they stress there is still not enough aid getting in.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to deliver that relief and to hand it out, but the magnitude of the requirements is so immense that we still have thousands of individuals and minors who are truly enduring hardship each evening," stated one official.
Future Issues and Agreement Plans
The subsequent part of the agreement involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the removal of troops, and other terms.
Aid groups have stressed the imperative for "expanded and ongoing humanitarian assistance to respond to pressing and long-term needs."
The war was sparked by an attack in late 2023. Later campaigns have caused a substantial number of casualties in the region, according to health ministry reports.
