Manchester United have terminated the contract of manager Ruben Amorim after a little over a year in charge. The move comes amid a growing disagreement over recruitment strategy and even with the team's recent upturn in form.

What Sparked the Decision

Relations between Amorim and the club's hierarchy, particularly director of football Jason Wilcox, had been deteriorating for some time. The decisive moment is believed to have been statements made by the coach following the recent 1-1 draw with their rivals. He reportedly told the recruitment team to "fulfill their responsibilities," emphasizing a major disagreement.

"I came here to be the manager of Manchester United – not to be the coach. That is clear. I know my name is not Tuchel, Mourinho or Conte but I’m the manager. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit, I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me."

A Disappointing Spell

Statistically, the Portuguese manager's time at the club was poor. He departs with a record of victories of less than 39 per cent and a points-per-game average of 1.24 in the top flight. The team suffered more defeats than it won in 2025.

However, his last matches in charge showed a slight improvement. United were defeated only once of his final eight matches and now find themselves in sixth place in the Premier League table, just three points off the coveted Champions League spots.

The Immediate Future

In the short term, former player the Scot will take charge on an interim basis. He is scheduled to be in the technical area for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley.

For the permanent role, oddsmakers and analysts are suggesting a range of potential candidates. Names in the frame include Spanish tactician Xavi Hernández, the Austrian manager, England national team boss Southgate, and another promising coach.
