UK, UN and EU Condemn a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Jail Sentence.
The sentencing of pro-democracy activist , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Rights groups and international powers have described the security-related charges driven by politics.
Global Condemnation and Calls for Release
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She characterized the trial as being driven by political motives under a law intended to muzzle critics of China. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and free him to his family.
“This verdict highlights how the ambiguous and wide-ranging clauses of Hong Kong’s national security legislation can be interpreted in breach of global human rights commitments,” remarked the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his immediate and unconditional release.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered activist publication, was detained following the introduction of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests endorsed by his publication.
He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing plotting to create inflammatory publications and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The second set of accusations were based on the disputed legislation.
Family Concerns
His son, Sebastien Lai, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation apart from his relatives. The legal team has called him the “world’s highest profile prisoner of conscience” behind bars at present.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “solace” that the judicial farce had concluded.
Diplomatic Fallout
This ruling has complicated the bilateral relationship. The UK's head of government Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case during a meeting with President Xi Jinping recently. However, the extent of progress towards his release is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai asked the upside to a visa-free travel agreement between the UK and China, remarking it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
Authorities' Statements
Conversely, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee stated the sentence manifested that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “mastermind” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and asserted the trial had been “justified and legal.” He urged other nations not to interfere in what he termed China's internal issues.
A Defining Moment
Press rights groups labeled Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “bleak moment for those who value a free press.”
Given an almost 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the strictest yet imposed under the disputed law.
